The Last Zone to Heal: Investigations in the Mattole Estuary
By C. Moss, Mattole Ecological Education Program Coordinator

"Watersheds unravel from the top down"
--MRC board member Hart Welsh

"Estuaries are usually the last zone of a river to heal"
-- Mattole Salmon Group board member David Simpson

It's a beautiful day in September and Honeydew School students are at the estuary, monitoring water quality parameters, taking photo points, inventorying aquatic macroinvertebrates, and collecting estuary plants to press and identify. The river's mouth is still closed.

2009 Board Election Results

Thank you to everyone who ran for a seat and for everyone who voted in the 2009 Board Election! The following individuals were elected to a 2-year term by the Council's membership:

Hezekiah Allen
Marcia Ehrlich
Jason Evans
Loren Miller
Tanner Speas
Claire Trower

The following referendum received 105 "no" votes and 25 "yes" votes:

Prior to August 2008, Article 5, Section 7 of MRC's bylaws read:

If, during the course of a term of office, an elected officer should be unable to participate in the work of the Board, or regularly attend meetings of the Board, or fails to be a member in good standing, or otherwise fails to perform their duties as a director of the Mattole Restoration Council and fails to resign from said office, an action of the Board, upon written advance notice to the Directors, may declare the position vacant and will be filled as specified in these bylaws.

At the August, 2008 board meeting, the board voted affirmatively on the following motion: Delete the phrase "fails to be a member in good standing of the Mattole Restoration Council."

Do you, as a Voting Member, agree to this change?

o A Yes vote indicates that you do not think Board members need to be members of MRC.

o A No vote indicates that you think board members should be required to be members of MRC.
