David Simpson It's a beautiful day in September and Honeydew
School students are at the estuary, monitoring water quality parameters, taking
photo points, inventorying aquatic macroinvertebrates, and collecting estuary
plants to press and identify. The river's mouth is still closed.
Fast
forward to late October. This time the day is gray and foggy and the estuary has
a stark, monochromatic beauty. The mouth is now open, thanks to some fall rain,
and the shrill cries of seagulls are a counterpoint to the muted atmosphere the
fog brings. Triple Junction High School students are spread out along the shore,
monitoring water quality and taking photo points. Dissolved oxygen levels have
dropped over the past month, as have temperature and water clarity.

Thank you to everyone who ran for a seat and
for everyone who voted in the 2009 Board Election! The following individuals were
elected to a 2-year term by the Council's membership:

The
following referendum received 105 "no" votes and 25 "yes"
votes: Prior to August 2008, Article 5, Section
7 of MRC's bylaws read: If, during the course of a
term of office, an elected officer should be unable to participate in the work
of the Board, or regularly attend meetings of the Board, or fails to be a member
in good standing, or otherwise fails to perform their duties as a director of
the Mattole Restoration Council and fails to resign from said office, an action
of the Board, upon written advance notice to the Directors, may declare the position
vacant and will be filled as specified in these bylaws. At
the August, 2008 board meeting, the board voted affirmatively on the following
motion: Delete the phrase "fails to be a member in good standing of the Mattole
Restoration Council." Do you, as a Voting Member,
agree to this change? o A Yes vote indicates that
you do not think Board members need to be members of MRC. o
A No vote indicates that you think board members should be required to be members
